Q&A: 2017 Women’s Winter Combine Coach Nik Chamberlain Offers Advice to Tryout Attendees

With our Women’s Pro Soccer Combines fast approaching, we took the opportunity to catch up with Nik Chamberlain, Head Coach of Women’s Icelandic Division 1 side Thróttur Reykjavík, who will attend the upcoming tryout events in search of players to add to his club’s roster for their 2018 campaign.

Thróttur recently concluded their 2017 league season with a third-placed finish, missing out on a top-tier play-off spot by goal difference, and part of that squad was 2016 PSC Pro Soccer Combine attendee Michaela Mansfield.

Check out our insightful interview with Chamberlain, where he offered his advice to combine attendees, revealed what skills and qualities he’s looking for in a player, and much more.

Hi, Nik. Thanks for taking the time to have a chat with us.

It’s no problem at all!

You signed 2016 San Diego combine attendee Michaela Mansfield earlier this year – what qualities does she possess that have made her fit into your team?

Michaela is a hard worker and is always willing to encourage those around her. She is always looking for the ball and consistently works as a team player.

Additionally, her pace and build-up play always pose a threat to the opposition – meaning she can create chances for both herself and her teammates.

What qualities and skills will you be looking for in players during the upcoming combines?

Someone who demonstrates that they understand the game tactically, with the decisions they make. I’ll be looking for hard-working players – individuals who demonstrate they can press in the correct manner.

What style of life can players expect at Thróttur, both on and off the field?

Thróttur is based in Reykjavík – the capital of Iceland – so off the field there’s lots to do and many opportunities to explore the finest areas of the country.

Players benefit from an all-round professional experience on the field, with both their teammates and coaching staff. Training sessions will always focus on improving players and identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition. This is achieved by holding video analysis sessions, analyzing statistics, strength and conditioning programs, and many other strategies.

Most importantly, it’s our priority that the players improve their game, enjoy the professionalism, and have fun.

Finally, what advice would you offer to players attending the upcoming combines?

I would advise everyone to be themselves. If you are a player who just keeps things simple with short passes then continue doing so; if you are a player who is vocal towards their teammates then stay that way. Given the limited time we get to see these players, coaches need to see the real thing. So the bottom line is – don’t be a player you are not.

Thanks, Nik. We’re looking forward to seeing you over in the States!

See you soon! I’m really looking forward to seeing what talent is on offer!

Nik will be attending both upcoming Women’s Pro Soccer Combines in Los Angeles, California (December 13-14-15, 2017) and Fort Lauderdale, Florida (December 17-18-19, 2017). For full details on these tryout events click here.
