Soccer, or football, has seen significant increases in popularity and growth outside of its continent of inception in recent years. Perhaps no other country has been more a part of that growth than the USA. Investment from executives, broadcasters and brands into America’s elite professional soccer league – the MLS – has propelled the game to heights that most thought impossible. Moreover, world-renowned stars including David Beckham, Kaka and Didier Drogba have left established, colossal clubs in Europe to get a taste of it all.
The rapid growth of the MLS has had a huge impact on the popularity of soccer in the States – increasing participation in the game at all age levels, from grass roots upwards has resulted in many MLS soccer tryouts. Perhaps going unnoticed, particularly to those outside of the USA, are the benefits for players participating in America’s lower tiers of soccer.
Affiliations between USL Pro and NASL clubs with MLS sides have provided a path for emerging professionals to break into a league featuring world-class players – a league otherwise very difficult to enter as a first-time professional due to the MLS drafting system’s procedures.
Those said affiliations provide players with the opportunity to gain professional experience and progress from the USL Pro or NASL into the MLS – and former PSC client Luke Mulholland is a testament to the fact that this can be achieved.
After falling through the cracks of the drafting system following his graduation, Luke signed with Wilmington Hammerheads as a result of his performances during one of the club’s combines, and has progressed from the NASL and USL Pro to the MLS – where he now plies his trade with Real Salt Lake.
